Accounting Manager

job summary:

This East Bay organization is experiencing rapid growth and is in development on several new sites. They are seeking a Director of Finance to be the go-to person for all accounting functions, including writing and implementing accounting policies.

  • Manages all general accounting operations.

  • Implements and monitors the month-end and year-end close accounting schedules.

  • Responsible for regulatory reporting

  • Protects Foundation assets by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing internal controls.

  • Guides financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing policies and procedures.

  • Ensures accurate and timely journal entries, monthly closings, and financial statement preparation. Prepares and/or reviews reconciliations of general ledger accounts.

  • Prepares monthly and annual financial reports including summary of operation results as well as analysis on variances to budget.

  • Responsible for annual audit and tax return preparation, working closely with external auditing firm.

  • Supervises payroll processing, assists with special payroll inputs, escalations, and payroll reconciliation. Provides backup support to the Payroll Specialist position through ongoing review of the payroll processing function, recommending process improvements and standards, and being capable of independently transmitting a full payroll.

  • Supervises donation revenue process. Collaborates with Development regarding donation handling and reconciliation.

  • Supervises accounts receivable processes, monitors and improves the processes to manage any possible fraud risks.

  • Supervises Accounts Payable function and process.

  • Responsible for further development, implementation and maintenance for internal controls and procedures to ensure that the accounting is being properly performed and financial position accurately reported.

  • Responsible for accounting system administration and report writing.

  • Works directly with the IT department in ensuring that appropriate financial management technology systems and platforms are in place

  • Responsible for accounting systems user training and documentation

  • Maintains professional and technical expertise by reviewing publications and staying up-to-date on industry principles and practices.

  • Serves on committees, team projects, task forces as the Finance Department representative and participant.

  • Manages and provides general and technical guidance and feedback to staff.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • B. A. degree in Accounting, Finance required.

  • CPA required

  • At least 8 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years in non-profits

  • At least 3 years of experience in managing overall accounting GL and supervision of staff in AP, AR, Payroll and GL

  • Experience in managing annual audit with clean audit and non-profit tax return

  • Experience working in education, or real estate a plus

  • Experience in development and implementation of financial policies and internal controls

  • Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and IRS Codes and other governmental regulations related to non-profit accounting

  • Demonstrated knowledge of current accounting and payroll standards, federal and state regulations

  • Knowledge and prior experience in cloud-based payroll and accounting systems, preferably Intacct, Adaptive Insight and Kronos

  • Demonstrated problem solving skills and effective organizational skills. Strong time management skills and ability to meet multiple competing deadlines

  • Ability to interact effectively with staff, management, and outside vendors

  • Exceptional communication skills both in written and verbal form

  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and unwavering commitment to our mission; a proactive, hands-on strategic thinker who will own, in partnership with the CFO and leadership team, the responsibility for the accounting department
